Perfect Speaker vs. Me

Изображение
Hello! Our task for this week was to compare the qualities of a perfect speaker and my personal qualities. For convenience I used the Venn diagram. Here's the result: As you can see, by many criteria I don't fit the perfect speaker. But I think that one day all my qualities will coincide with those of the perfect speaker! Have you made such a diagram? What did you get?

Attribution and Motivation

Hello, my dear friend! When studying one of the modules in social psychology, I found a very interesting lecture, which dealt with motivation and attribution. From how we explain the reasons for our own successes and failures, it depends on how much we are motivated in the future to achieve some goals that are important to us. European researcher Bernard Weiner found that people with high motivation tend to explain the results of their activities (both successes and failures) with their own efforts. People with low motivation tend to explain the results of their activities with external factors. They tend to explain failure simply as unlucky, and tend to explain successes as external, uncontrollable factors, for example, circumstances have developed successfully. Bernard Weiner’s attribution theory has become one of the key theories of motivation because it shows how the motivation for our future activities depends on how we process feedback about success or failu...

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and Stage Fright

Have you ever made a prediction about your life that came true? For instance, you might predict that a project you are working on will turn out exceedingly well, and feel confident in your ability to foresee the future when your hard work pays off and your project is received positively. Alternatively, you might expect that a speech you have to give at a work event will go terribly, and thus you feel no surprise when you stutter, mumble, and frequently forget your next point while speaking. Although you could take these instances as evidence that you know yourself and your abilities quite well (and this can be true), you might not think about the effects your expectations have on your behavior. When our beliefs and expectations influence our behavior at the subconscious level, we're enacting what is known as a self-fulfilling prophecy. How does this relate to the stage fright? As a rule, when we speak in front of an audience, we are afraid that we may look stupid, s...

Prototype of a Perfect Speaker

The perfect speaker. Who do you imagine when you say these words? A handsome man with a dazzling smile, or a pretty woman in a skirt and a soft voice? It's not easy to capture the imagination of an audience and keep them entertained. Great public speakers have a rare talent. But let's try to imagine a person who can safely be called a perfect speaker! Here are my criteria for a good speaker: Interest in the audience -  You definitely communicate with a professional if he is primarily interested in the public. A good speaker will find out who is present in the audience, what age group it belongs to, what kind of education people have and, most importantly, what they want from his speech. Speech content and a form of the presentation -  People are always interested in new ideas, and really good speakers give listeners really good content. Сlothing style and neat appearance -  When in front of you is a beautiful person, dressed with taste and style, ...

Social Psychology №2

Hello, my dear friend! I continue to study social psychology with my groupmates. Next in line is the second module that talks about prototypes of ideal speakers and social categorization. My test results for the second module: 15/15. Despite the fact that the lectures were rather complicated, I answered all the questions correctly! Wow! Have you already started this course? If so, share your impressions!

Social Psychology? Wow!

I am in a hurry to share amazing news with you - I signed up for a course on social psychology! Our teacher provided us with the opportunity to take a course studying social psychology in order to be successful and confident in our public speech. Great, isn't it?? We will study modules every week, listening to lectures and passing the test. We have already studied the first module, and our task was to pass the test after listening to 6 lectures. What about my results? Look at this: I think this is a good result for the first test! Have you signed up for this course? Be sure to write to me about it, it's very interesting to see my colleagues on the course!

For and Against

When we have the right to make a mistake, then the second time we do everything perfectly! Our next task in public speaking lessons was to “sell” a pudlic speaking activity. Sounds interesting, right? I got the public speaking ability called "For and Against". This public speaking activity encourages flexibility; the ability to see a topic from opposing sides. A speaker has 30 seconds to talk 'for' a topic and then another 30 seconds to speak 'against' it. Examples of the topics: money is the root of all evil; a country gets the government it deserves; 'green' politics are just the current fashion; pets in apartments should be banned; marriage is essentially a business contract; poverty is a state of mind; euthanasia is unjustifiable; global warming is media hype; cloning animals should be banned; animal testing is immoral. As you can see, this ability looks exciting and extremely interesting! In the first lesson, we pre...

Repost from my groupmate

Today I read an interesting post from my groupmate about netiquette rules Here is the post: https://publicspeechfeargoodbye.blogspot.com/2020/03/netiquette-rules.html Remember that we are here to support each other and show approval! (c) Polina

5 Basic Rules of Netiquette

Изображение
Every day we write messages to our friends, watch news and read posts and articles on the Internet. We also write comments and posts to talk about events in our lives and share opinions on any occasion. But do we always do it right? Do we think that our words can offend or upset even if we didn't want to? We must always remember the rules of the netiquette which will allow us to communicate on social networks without problems and to avoid troubles and conflicts. Rule #1 The Human Element We write all posts and comments while at the computer or holding the phone in our hands. But these posts and comments are read by people, not robots. Therefore, we mustn't forget that all communication in social networks happens as if we are talking with people in real life. Rule #2 Check Yourself Nobody can judge your appearance, voice tone, or something else. You will, however, be judged based on your content and engagement, so keep this tip in mind: be positive and courteous ...
